The line
We are not a law firm.
Their Matters does not give legal advice. We do not decide elections, construe a will, or tell you which heir should receive what. We assemble the work, track the deadlines, and put a licensed lawyer on anything that is the practice of law.
What that means in practice
Document assembly, calendaring, letters to institutions, and project management of an estate are not the practice of law. Filing a petition, asserting a legal position to a third party, and any election (a tax election, a spousal election, a disclaimer) are. The second list is done by a lawyer licensed in that state, or it is not done.
The money
Their Matters never takes custody of estate funds. There is no transfer button. The executor opens the estate account at a bank of their choosing. Every payment out of that account is made by the executor. We keep a ledger of what they did, because they are personally liable, and because we will be asked.
Who you pay
You pay Their Matters a flat fee for the work on the price page. Where a lawyer is required, that lawyer is either included in Complete or bills you directly. We do not take a percentage of a lawyer’s fee. That is not a slogan. It is the rule that has ended companies that treated it as one.
These pages are not advice
Nothing on this site is legal advice about your estate, your state, or your family. If you need advice, you need a lawyer licensed where the person died. First Days is how we help you find out whether you need one.
